A NOTE ON THIS WORK

Filter began in 2020 as a Twitter artwork. A Python process listened to Twitter's live public stream for the words noise and silence, analyzed the sentiment of each post, and used a small shared database so different screens could listen together.

Since then, Twitter was acquired by Elon Musk and renamed X. The free developer API access that made experiments like this possible became restricted and moved behind paid access, making the public conversation less accessible as a creative material for independent artists.

Rather than leave the work frozen in 2020, this version treats that change as part of its life. Filter now listens to the open AT Protocol and Bluesky network. The source has changed, but the gesture remains: public words arrive, sentiment changes their scale, and noise and silence accumulate, interrupt, and erase one another.
